In the distant 30s of last century, in February, a traditional all-Polish competition-marches of military patrols (modern-Biathletes) called “Hutsul way of the Legions’ Second Brigade” are held in the Carpathian region.
One hundred years ago the forests of Hutsulshchyna were full of beasts and attracted titled hunters from different parts of Europe. The graphs, lords and princes of the known European dynasties hunted here. Having made three expeditions to Africa and two to India the Prince John of Lichtenstein said: “I make more of the wonderful deer rutting season in the Carpathians than the tiger hunting in India”. The closest Hitler’s associate Hermann Goering, later “Nazi number two”, and also a Governor of Galicia District, a group leader of SS Otto Wächter hunted in Hutsulshchyna.
The soviet experimental introduction of collective farming in Hutsulshchyna failed rather quickly. In spite of all efforts of communist agronomists to subdue rocks, beets and cereals refused to grow in the highland. Also Hutsuls could not adopt the collective method of farming.
